OBJECTS IN PAPER
These pieces are all generated from the plants and trees that grow in Royle’s garden and hold within them the muted colours, fine-woven textures and subtle differences that exist between different plant species. Royle has discovered a way to let her trees speak for themselves through a series of beautiful objects and compositions which release, articulate and distill the authentic structures and chromatic variations of each chosen tree.
Through a transformative process of collecting, breaking down and reconstituting, Royle makes malleable materials which enable her to create more three-dimensional works which literally embody the different species which grow in her garden. Fig trees, pear, cherry, palm, acacia, eucalyptus, thistledown, olive and a woodland mix are transformed into paper fibre which can be shaped, cast and moulded. There are more formal geometric compositions made from small handmade paper samples and a newer series of disks made entirely from paper fibre taken from the garden. Each one holds the weave and colour of a particular species within itself. Their materiality nods to ceramics and archaeology, but they are softer and not baked. They are objects of revelation, imperfect circles, curved and rounded to contain ancient processes, the weather, photosynthesis, time, place and years of being exposed to the elements. As trees and plants do, they seem to hold on to their moisture and a memory of the earth. Different shades and densities of fibrous papier-mâché are pressed together in layers and used to create lines of subtly different colours which remember the growing plant forms in the garden and at the same time incorporate the anatomy of the trees themselves.

Queste opere sono tutte generate dalle piante e dagli alberi che crescono nel giardino della Royle e al loro interno contengono i colori smorzati, i finissimi intrecci delle texture e le sottili differenze che esistono tra le varie specie vegetali. La Royle ha scoperto un modo per dare voce ai suoi alberi attraverso una bellissima serie di oggetti e di composizioni che rilasciano, articolano e distillano le autentiche strutture e variazioni cromatiche proprie di ogni albero scelto.
Attraverso un processo evolutivo di raccolta, decomposizione e ricostituzione, la Royle crea materiali malleabili che le consentono di realizzare opere più tridimensionali, le quali incarnano le varie specie di piante presenti nel suo giardino: alberi di fico, pero, ciliegio, palma, acacia, eucalipto, pappo del cardo, olivo e una varietà boschiva vengono trasformati in fibre di carta che possono essere poi modellate, gettate e plasmate. Si passa dalle composizioni geometriche più formali, realizzate con dei piccoli campioni di carta fatta a mano, a una serie più recente, composta da dischi fatti interamente di fibra di carta proveniente dal giardino. Ciascuna di queste opere contiene al proprio interno la storia e il colore di una specie ben precisa. La loro materialità richiama il mondo della ceramica e dell'archeologia, ma il risultato è più morbido e ovviamente non avviene la cottura. Sono oggetti di rivelazione, cerchi imperfetti, curvi e arrotondati così da poter raccogliere quei processi antichi, come i fenomeni legati al clima, la fotosintesi, lo scorrere del tempo, la posizione e gli anni di esposizione agli elementi meteorologici. Proprio come fanno gli alberi e le piante, anche questi oggetti sembrano trattenere l'umidità e un ricordo vivido della terra. Le diverse tonalità e densità della cartapesta fibrosa vengono pressate insieme per creare una serie di strati, utilizzati poi per dare vita a delle linee di colore leggermente differenti, le quali rimandano alle forme delle piante mentre crescevano nel giardino, incorporando al contempo anche l'anatomia degli alberi stessi.
