LIFE CYCLE DRAWINGS

These works were made using a process that Royle discovered by accident while collecting ripe figs for another project. She placed rows of figs on a large sheet of watercolour paper and left them to mature. As they over ripened they began releasing their juices into the paper leaving behind soft rounded forms and variegated pink, purple and green stains, like beautifully coloured echoes of the original fruit.

Royle was surprised by the next evolution when tiny fruit fly larvae began to emerge from the decomposing figs and started moving outwards across the paper from their central fruit source, leaving a finely coloured weave of tracks and trails before eventually metamorphosing into little flies.

Royle was immediately captivated by the exquisite natural lines created by the larvae, radiating out like singular hairs and threads from the smudged fruit pigment seeped into the paper. The vermicular movement of the larva produced a series of delicate starburst patterns around each fig stain; a series of intricate line drawings randomly traced by one of nature’s determined and vibrant life cycles.

In order to fix these subtle lines and colours and make them permanent, Royle then added watercolour to the fig colours and carefully placed more tiny larvae on the paper to recompose and reinforce their original emanating tracks.

The end result are a series of strange and beautiful watercolour drawings where mulberry and blush-coloured shapes on paper meet and run into each other via tiny walked lines created by hatched larvae and their instinctive movement outwards in search of light and nutrition. Their life force and particular motion remains choreographed and printed on the paper.

Queste opere sono state realizzate utilizzando un processo che Royle ha scoperto per caso mentre raccoglieva fichi maturi per un altro progetto. Ha disposto file di fichi su un grande foglio di carta per acquerello e li ha lasciati maturare. Superata la maturazione, hanno iniziato a rilasciare i loro succhi sulla carta, lasciando dietro di sé forme morbide e tondeggianti e macchie variegate di rosa, viola e verde, simili a echi colorati del frutto originale.

Royle è rimasta sorpresa dalla successiva evoluzione quando piccole larve di moscerino della frutta hanno iniziato a emergere dai fichi in decomposizione, muovendosi verso l'esterno sulla carta dal loro centro fruttifero, lasciando una trama di tracce e sentieri delicatamente colorati, prima di trasformarsi in piccoli moscerini.

Royle è rimasta immediatamente affascinata dalle linee naturali e squisite create dalle larve, che si irradiavano come sottili fili e capelli dai pigmenti fruttati sfumati nella carta. Il movimento vermiforme delle larve ha prodotto una serie di delicati motivi a raggi intorno a ogni macchia di fico; una serie di intricati disegni lineari tracciati casualmente da uno dei cicli vitali più determinati e vibranti della natura.

Per fissare queste linee e colori sottili e renderli permanenti, Royle ha poi aggiunto colori ad acquerello ai pigmenti dei fichi e ha posizionato con attenzione altre piccole larve sulla carta per ricomporre e rafforzare le loro tracce originarie.

Il risultato finale è una serie di strani e bellissimi disegni ad acquerello in cui forme color mora e rosa tenue sulla carta si incontrano e si mescolano attraverso minuscole linee tracciate dalle larve appena nate e dai loro movimenti istintivi alla ricerca di luce e nutrimento. La loro forza vitale e il loro movimento particolare rimangono coreografati e impressi sulla carta.
